According to a JD Power & Assoc survey of over 37k respondents, a bit more than half of the people who are lucky enough to have it in the U.S. don't really know the precious facets of the jewel we call health insurance.
People with infertility are surely lumped in that batch. Doctors and their staff have become skilled at helping insured yet confused patients figure out what diagnostics and treatments they can expect to be covered and at what percentage.
Still, it's common to read Internet discussions on the topic where folks are heartily giving out misinformation based on their lack of understanding -- and thereby choosing to forego even a first consultation with a fertility expert. I've seen some of the largest insurers in the world branded as "providing no infertility insurance" when that's plainly not exactly the case. Most of the time, these same messengers of despair haven't a clue as to which path to walk toward comprehending and making use of the fineprint in their own plan.
To be sure, accessing healthcare through almost any kind of insurance policy is complicated. But for that majority of people who truly do not have infertility insurance coverage and for whom the treatment will resultingly be out of reach, it's just a bit aggravating to read that even those with coverage aren't making good use of what is increasingly becoming a luxury in this country for any health condition. And whining about it, to boot.
